Trauma Counseling in Santa Cruz, CA

Therapy office near downtown Santa Cruz where Christopher Greer, LCSW provides trauma counseling

My office at 5905 Soquel Dr. is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Santa Cruz — close enough to fit a session into a workday, far enough to feel like a step away from it. I see clients in person from Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, Scotts Valley, and Live Oak, and anyone else in California by secure video.

Trauma counseling here isn't about retelling the worst thing that happened to you until it stops hurting. We work with how trauma actually lives in your nervous system — the vigilance, the shutdown, the reaching for something to take the edge off using EMDR-informed methods, somatic approaches, and more. Whether it's a single overwhelming event or years of chronic stress, neglect, or relational wounds, the goal is the same: feeling safe in your own body again.

Most of the people I work with in Santa Cruz are high-functioning on the outside. They’re running teams, raising kids, holding it together, but and exhausted underneath. If that sounds familiar, a free 20-minute call is a low-stakes way to find out whether we're a fit.

When Escape Becomes the Problem

Temporary relief through alcohol or other substances often deepens the cycle. Substance use therapy combined with trauma-focused approaches (including EMDR-informed methods) helps address root causes, reduce anxiety, and build healthier coping strategies.

Trauma and substance use are rarely separate problems. Drinking, using, overworking, and numbing out are usually solutions that worked at some point — they made something unbearable bearable. The trouble is that they stop working, and the thing underneath is still there. Treating one without the other tends to mean either white-knuckling sobriety while the trauma stays live, or processing trauma without the stability to tolerate it.

I work on both at once, at whatever pace your nervous system can handle. That might mean harm reduction rather than abstinence, at least to start. It might mean building coping capacity for months before we touch the hardest material. There's no required destination and no script — where you land is yours to decide.

How We'll Work Together

Aerial view of a road winding through a green forest

Imagine freedom from isolation, stronger relationships, renewed hobbies, authentic living, and inner peace. Through evidence-based individual therapy and trauma counseling, we can uncover core issues, heal wounds, and create lasting change — whether facing trauma, addiction, or everyday overwhelm.

  1. It starts with a conversation. A free 20-minute phone call, no intake paperwork. You tell me what's going on, I tell you honestly whether I think I can help. If I'm not the right fit, I'll say so and point you toward someone who is.

  2. The first few sessions are about groundwork. We'll go through your history, what you've already tried, and what you actually want out of this. Before touching anything difficult, we build enough stability that the harder work is tolerable rather than flooding.

  3. Then we go at your pace. For trauma, that often means EMDR-informed and somatic approaches — working with how the past lives in your nervous system, not just talking about it. For substance use, it might mean harm reduction rather than abstinence, at least to start. There's no fixed script and no required destination.

  4. We'll check whether it's working. Most clients meet weekly to begin with. Some notice a shift within a couple of months; for others it takes longer, and that's normal. Either way, I'll raise it regularly — if the work isn't going somewhere useful, I'd rather adjust than keep going out of habit.
